Bringing it all Back Home
It has been a long-held ambition of South Wind Blows producer, Other Voices’ founder and UCC graduate Philip King to bring Other Voices back home to the beautiful environs of the UCC campus and to Cork City. Thursday September 29 saw that ambition become a reality when UCC’s iconic Aula Maxima, the much-loved Honan Chapel, and the award winning Glucksman Gallery were transformed into the stunning backdrops for Other Voices: Bringing It All Back Home, an unforgettable night of musical performance and song in Cork.
UCC’s recently launched, inaugural, Arts and Culture Plan sets out how UCC will harness and activate its cultural, artistic heritage and creative assets and provide opportunities for student development. Speaking at Thursday’s performance, UCC President, Professor John O’Halloran, reiterated the university’s dedication to championing arts and culture:
We’re confronted by major crises at the moment, whether it is climate change, whether it is geopolitical issues, and we in UCC believe we can achieve, through education, three things; that we can speak to the head, through generating knowledge, we can use our hands in construction, in doing good things, but we can also speak to the heart and if we want to solve the world's problems we've got to be able to speak with empathy to the heart. Whether that’s through poetry, song, music, dance, or literature, that's what we're trying to do here. It is to educate people in the broader sense, what we call life-wide learning. Everybody is familiar with lifelong learning, that incremental learning that we all talk about, but life-wide learning encompasses those other dimensions that make people special and we believe UCC graduates are special. There are 200,000 across the world, some joining us tonight, and I really hope they are enjoying this from the Aula Maxima.
The event featured stunning sets from alt-electronic artist and member of the Soft Boy Collective Yenkee, art-punk Cork three-piece Pretty Happy, three-part harmony trio Rufus Nightjar consisting of Branwen Kavanagh, Anna Mieke and Zoe Basha, plus a special performance by Sunday’s Well band of UCC traditional musicians led by Caitlín Nic Gabhann, UCC’s artist in residence for 2022. The concerts were live-streamed around the world and will be broadcast by RTÉ at a later date.
