Postgraduate Spotlight Colm McElwain

8 Nov 2021

The second of our postgraduate students to be put under the spotlight is Colm McElwain.

Colm completed his MPharm in 2015 and a Masters in Clinical Research in 2019 and has worked in a patient-facing role within primary care and in the clinical trial setting in the HRB Clinical Research Facility, Galway (CRFG). Colm is a valued member of the postgrad team here in the department , and when we asked what he thought of studying with the department he said;

"I was delighted to begin my HRB-funded PhD studies in 2019, under the supervision of Dr. Cathal McCarthy, to continue developing my career in translational research. I am currently investigating the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and meta-inflammation as a shared pathogenic network in gestational diabetes mellitus.

Choosing the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, UCC for my postgraduate studies has allowed me to gain access to a wide range of expertise and opportunities within the field. The department has a broad spectrum of active research, ranging from basic biology and preclinical studies to clinical and translational research. The academic staff are both experienced and approachable, making it a great environment for learning and collaboration."
