The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is an active and bustling facility that provides student-centred teaching and research opportunities. Every year, approximately 400 undergraduate students complete four-week attachments under the department's guidance in DEMIV/GEMII and DEMV/GEMIV Medicine programs. Teaching is conducted on six different sites, including Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital, Bon Secours Hospital Cork, University Hospital Kerry, Waterford University Hospital, and Tipperary University Hospital, where students have the opportunity to learn in a clinical environment.

Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturers lead the teaching on these sites. During their attachments, students learn from clinical teams in a hospital-based environment, with learning encouraged on ward rounds and outpatient clinics. Fourth-year medical students gain experience in the NICU and community care by attending community-based clinics. The module includes a comprehensive teaching program, including lectures, clinical simulation practice, small group bedside teaching, and tutorials

Students who wish to undertake a Senior Research Project with the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health please email aoife.crowley@ucc.ie your project request.  The Department of Paediatrics will take into consideration your preferred area of research and allocate you where possible a supervisor with the same area of interest.  

Medical Electives - Academic Year 2023/2024

Medical students have the opportunity to do junior clinical electives or summer electives in the Paediatric Unit at Cork University Hospital during the summer months.
