A Year in Review: A message from the Dean, Professor Mark Poustie
As we bid farewell to 2022, The Dean, Professor Mark Poustie, reflects on some of the year's highlights at the School of Law.
As I write this, we are drawing to the end of a very eventful year at UCC School of Law.
We are delighted to be fully back in-person on campus for 2022-23 and it is fantastic to have the students back on campus with all the buzz that brings.
As you will see in our 2022 School of Law Review, there have been notable research achievements, great engagement with alumni, a revived focus on internationalisation following the pandemic and some great achievements by our students in a range of fields from business to participation in COP27.
As you will see, we have continued our focus on Shaping a Just Society, exemplified by our hosting of a Ukrainian refugee scholar under UCC's Sanctuary Scheme, by Professor Louise Crowley's inspirational leadership of the Bystander Initiative and the continuing Traveller's Equality and Justice Project, which scooped a further award.
Perhaps our key achievement in the year was the fantastic news in April that the School of Law has been ranked in the top 100 Law Schools in the World, climbing to 75th in the world and first in Ireland (QS Rankings by Subject 2022). The QS subject rankings identify the world's leading schools in particular fields, taking into account academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. The strength of UCC School of Law across these fields has propelled it to the Top 75, a rise from the Top 100 when the last QS Subject Rankings were released. We are honoured to be ranked among the world's best law schools and cement our place as a world-leading institution for legal education.
In closing, I'd like to acknowledge the very hard work and dedication of all my colleagues through the year, not least in transitioning back to in-person teaching, and the talent, resilience and engagement of our students.
I wish all of you and yours a very peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable festive season and all the best for 2023!
Best Regards,
Mark
