A Year in Review 2022: Event Highlights
As we bid farewell to another year, we reflect on some of 2022’s highlights at the UCC School of Law.
Now is the turn of key Event Highlights.
Law & Environment Conference
The prestigious Law and the Environment Conference returned to campus this May. Hosted by the School of Law and the Centre for Law and the Environment, the conference provides a regular forum for the expert presentation of legal developments and research results in the area of Environmental Law. This year's conference considered the theme 'Environmental Rights: From Discourse to Legal Action'.
The date of the 2023 Law & Environment Conference will be announced in the new year. Keep an eye on The Centre for Law and the Environment website for details of 2023’s conference.
‘We are UCC Law’ Speaker Series
This semester, we launched the ‘We are UCC Law’ speaker series, which was aimed at giving students extra value for coming on campus. The series featured presentations from colleagues, alumni and friends on topical issues, careers, decision-making and life journeys. Many thanks to those who contributed towards this inspiring series.
Children/Youth and the Right to a Healthy Environment
In November the School hosted an on-line seminar, which was held to coincide with COP27 on Children/Youth and the Right to a Healthy Environment’. Speakers at this event, which included Dr Aoife Daly and student Alicia O’Sullivan from UCC School of Law, reflected on the significance of the right to a healthy environment for children and youth, from the perspective of the UN Convention on the rights of the child.
Discussions in Dispute Resolution 2022
In October the School hosted ‘Discussions in Dispute Resolution 2022: Understanding Conflict and Resolving Disputes’ in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Ireland and the Irish Professional Mediators’ Organisation. This event marked the conclusion of National Forum funded projects which sought to develop and enhance curriculum offerings in dispute resolution at the School of Law. Whilst the projects have now formally concluded, their impact remains ongoing. Modules in alternative dispute resolution are available at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the School of Law. A digital badge in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution was developed as part of the Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement 2020 project and will be offered next semester to students across the University.
Women in Leadership Series
The Women in Leadership Series is an initiative led by Head of College Professor Ursula Kilkelly and organised by the College of Business and Law. It strives to raise the profile and understanding of women in various leadership roles - in business, law, sport, public life and arts. Award winning author and columnist Louise O’Neill was the featured guest at the inaugural event of the College of Business and Law’s Women in Leadership Series. Other speakers include Entrepreneur Niamh Murray, who graduated with a BCL Law and Business degree in 2021. Niamh is the co-founder of ForgetMeNot, a mobile application which aims to aid communication between loved ones, carers and those living with dementia.
8th Children's Rights Research Symposium hosted by UCC School of Law in association with CREAN.
An international PhD symposium was held at UCC in December 2022. Featuring presentations from PhD students from across Europe and beyond, the event was a collaboration between the School of Law at UCC and CREAN (Children’s Rights European Academic Network) designed to further the development of doctoral research in children’s rights in a supportive environment. Each doctoral student is paired with an experienced PhD supervisor and children’s rights scholar who provides dedicated feedback to them on their research.
