This webinar celebrates the first Health Impact Assessment carried out on a strategic city development plan in Ireland, which drew on Institute of Public Health Ireland HIA guidance to navigate the process. The format of the webinar is to provide a brief overview of the HIA, delivered by Dr Monica O’Mullane (UCC), with reflections on the process from the Chair of the HIA Steering Group, Dr Mary O’Mahony (HSE), and Senior Executive Planner, Karen O’Mahony (Cork City Council).

 

Speakers

  • Dr Monica O’Mullane is Principal Investigator of the HIA-IM project, co-hosted by ISS21 and the School of Public Health in UCC. The HIA on the Cork City Development Plan (2022-2028) was carried out as part of the HIA-IM project, with a view to both producing the assessment and learning from the process, in order to create a HIA Implementation Model to strengthen HIA practice and policy going forward. Monica participated in the HIA Working Group in carrying out the tasks, as indicated by the Steering Group, for the assessment.
  • Dr Mary O’Mahony is a Specialist in Public Health Medicine in the Department of Public Health in the HSE South. Mary will reflect on the process of doing the HIA from her perspective as Chair of the intersectoral Steering Group. 
  • Karen O’Mahony is a Senior Executive Planner and Urban Designer in Cork City Council. Karen participated in this HIA as part of the Working Group.
