Festival of Social Science: launch of 'Social Networks and Migration' (Prof Louise Ryan)
On 20-21 November 2023 UCC Futures: Collective Social Futures hosted a Festival of Social Science, including a book launch (see below); an evening of music and performance; and a full-day symposium showcasing social science research across UCC.
Launch of Social Networks and Migration: Relocations, Relationships and Resources
The festival began with a presentation from leading migration scholar, Professor Louise Ryan (London Metropolitan University) to launch her new book, Social Networks and Migration: Relocations, Relationships and Resources. This book provides rich insights into migrants’ social networks, drawing on interviews with migrants who followed various transnational routes in every decade since the 1940s.With a particular focus on London, it charts how social networks are formed and sustained, how trust is developed and how social support is accessed, and explores the key opportunities and obstacles that migrants encounter. In the course of her presentation, Professor Ryan also reflected on her own experiences of moving from Ireland to the UK and establishing new social and professional networks.
