BACK IN THE USSR
Crosstalk - the flagship discussion programme of RT - Russia's English-language TV channel - marked the 20th anniversary of the breakup of the Soviet Union, in December 1991, with a debate between Professor Geoffrey Roberts of the School of History, UCC, Professor Stephen Cohen of New York University and Professor Richard Krickus of Mary Washington University.
During the discussion Professor Roberts suggested that while the fall of Soviet communism may have been inevitable the collapse of the multinational Soviet state might have been avoided. He also argued that a new non-communist union of former Soviet republics was not inconceivable, depending on future geopolitical events such as the collapse of the Eurozone or the disintegration of the EU. This programme was first broadcast worldwide on 25/26 December, 2011.
