School of Chemistry students attend RSC Broadening Horizons event

23 Jun 2025

Two students from the School are currently participating in the RSC’s Broadening Horizons initiative. Earlier in June they attended the Taster Event in Manchester to bring together the scholars with alumni and industry partners.

Postgraduate researcher Rebecca Galway said “I was honoured to be a part of the 4th cohort of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Broadening Horizons Programme, a brilliant initiative supporting ethnic minority students in the chemical sciences and opening doors to diverse career paths beyond academia. Attending the recent Taster Event in Manchester was an inspiring experience that deepened my understanding of how chemistry is applied across industry and the importance of inclusion, connection, and professional growth. A big thanks to the RSC team and partner companies for putting together such an event.”

3rd Year BSc (Hons) Chemistry student Gregory Troy said "Recently I attended the Broadening Horizons taster event in Manchester. I really enjoyed participating in the networking events they organised, where I had the chance to chat with other people in the programme, previous cohorts, and participating industry partners. In particular, I enjoyed my one-to-one chat with Dr Kavitha Bharatham, who shared her experience with computational medicinal chemistry and CADD. I was also lucky to attend talks on CV building, networking, and personal reflection. I made friends there whom I’m looking forward to seeing again outside of the programme, and I’m really excited for the next stage. Next month, I hope to attend some site visits across England and benefit from the mentorship opportunities that follow. I would definitely recommend anyone who’s eligible to apply to be part of next year’s cohort."
