School of Chemistry Receives Dow Green Chemistry Education Award to Enhance Sustainable Teaching Practices

25 Apr 2025

The School of Chemistry is proud to announce that it has been awarded a Dow Green Chemistry Education Award from Beyond Benign, to support the integration of sustainable practices into chemistry education.

This award will enable the School to incorporate greener, more sustainable approaches into physical chemistry experiments, an area that has traditionally been underrepresented in green chemistry teaching.

The award team, comprising Dr. Gillian Collins, Dr. Brendan Bulfin, and Dr. Sally O’Hanlon, will focus on reducing the environmental impact of laboratory practicals by implementing more sustainable experimental designs in undergraduate laboratories. By embedding green chemistry principles into the curriculum, the School aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to drive sustainability in their future careers.

Prof Anita Maguire, Head of the School of Chemistry, welcomed the award, ‘Congrats to Gillian, Brendan and Sally on securing this award to support initiatives within the School to reduce the environmental impact of undergraduate laboratory practicals, ensuring our students are aware of the issues involved in improving sustainability. This award reflects the hard work of the team to deliver on the sustainability focus within the School in line with our Beyond Benign commitment. ‘
