UCC hosts the 8th Symposium of the Irish Biological Inorganic Chemistry Society (IBICS-8)

The School of Chemistry, in collaboration with the School of Microbiology, led on bringing IBICS-8 to UCC Western Gateway Building on Friday 6th December 2024.
The symposium was a massive success, showcasing the best of multidisciplinary research at the interface of inorganic chemistry and biology.

The scientific programme was headlined by two excellent international plenary speakers, Prof. Tatjana Parac-Vogt (KU Leuven) who showcased work on metal-oxo clusters as artificial enzymes, and Dr. Jennifer Cavet (University of Manchester) who presented on metal stress in gastrointestinal pathogens. We were delighted to include three distinguished invited speakers in our programme; Prof. Dmitri Papkovsky (UCC), Prof. Andrew Kellett (DCU), and Dr. Joseph Byrne (UCD). Notably, there was also strong early career representation from across Ireland at postgraduate and postdoctoral levels who contributed oral, flash and poster presentations. Prizes sponsored by Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (ICI), CRC Press, and MSD, were awarded to close out the event, with Jack Daly from the School of Chemistry securing the Best Poster Prize sponsored by the RSC Republic of Ireland Local Section. Jack is supervised by Dr. Davide Tiana and Dr. Dave Otway.
Prof Anita Maguire, Head of School said ‘Congratulations to the organising committee - the School of Chemistry in UCC is delighted to host this important national meeting bringing together researchers to discuss their recent results at the interface between inorganic chemistry and biology.’
The local organising committee thanks all those who contributed to organisation and participation at IBICS-8, including the generous support from our sponsors.
