4th Annual BASF Summer School for Chemistry Teachers

Annual conference for secondary school chemistry teachers.

The annual BASF Conference for Leaving Certificate Chemistry teachers is taking place in UCC this week, with numerous contributions from UCC Chemistry staff.

This summer school involves a partnership between BASF, PDST, UCC and the Cork branch of the ISTA. The aim of the summer school is to give chemistry teachers the opportunity to develop their understanding of the Industrial Chemistry and Atmospheric Chemistry sections of the Leaving Certificate Chemistry syllabus.

Programme
9.00 – 9.30 Registration. Tea / Coffee in Room G2 Kane Building, UCC.
9.30 – 10.15 The Greenhouse Effect - Professor John Sodeau, Dept. of Chemistry, UCC
10.15 – 11.00 The Ozone Layer and CFC Substitutes – Dr. John Wenger, Dept. of Chemistry, UCC.
11.00 – 11.15 Tea / Coffee
11.15 – 11.45 Liquefaction of Air in the Leaving Certificate Chemistry syllabus - Dr Donnacha O’Connell, Dept. of Chemistry, UCC.
11.45 – 1.00 Laboratory practical session – Dr Declan Kennedy, Department of Education, UCC.
11.45 – 1.00 Visit to liquid nitrogen plant (in small groups) – Dr Donnacha O’Connell, Dept. of Chemistry, UCC.
1.00 – 2.00 Lunch.
2.00 Bus departs from UCC to BASF Little Island .
2.30 – 4.00 Tour of BASF plant and viewing of batch reactor in operation – BASF staff.
4 p.m. Presentation of Certificates of Attendance.

The summer school takes place on Tuesday June 23rd and Wednesday June 24th (Day 2 is a repeat of Day 1).
