Fourth Year Biochemistry Students Lead Engaging DNA Workshop for Transition Year Students

On November 12th, 46 transition year students from Presentation College, Cork, visited the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology for a DNA workshop filled with valuable content and learning opportunities.
Thirteen outstanding 4th year Biochemistry students—Aisling, Alana, Andrew, Chelsea, Ciara, Emmet, John, Josh, Laura, Lyselle, Ruairi, Sandra, and Sarah—demonstrated various techniques, offered advice on courses at UCC, and ensured an educational and enjoyable experience for everyone. The day also had time for engaging discussions about GAA!
"The workshop was a great way for TY students to gain insight into Science at Third Level. The boys really enjoyed getting hands-on experience in the lab and were interested in learning more about working as a lab scientist. At the end of the lab, they were able to determine whether three patients were affected by sickle cell anaemia (SCA), carriers of SCA, or unaffected. The ability to be able to diagnose a patient was really intriguing to them and prompted some interesting questions about biomedical diagnostics. Overall the DNA workshop was really rewarding for both the students and demonstrators. Thanks to Dr. Sinéad Kerins, and technical officers Patrycja and Tricia for organising the day!"
Chelsea O’Sullivan - 4th year Biochemistry student and demonstrator.
"We had a wonderful day on Tuesday. Many thanks to all your wonderful demonstrators and staff for a marvellous experience the boys won't forget."
Ms. Claire Lynch - Presentation College, Cork.
