Visiting American students arrive on “International Research Experience for Students (IRES)” programme at Lough Hyne

27 Aug 2014

Earlier this month, a group of visiting American students arrived at Lough Hyne to begin a 5 week programme of training in research methods.

The students were successful in an open competition for places and are currently studying from 2nd yr undergrad to PhD levels and come from Universities in Oregon, Florida, Louisiana and New Hampshire. During their stay they will undertake individual research projects that they will give mini seminars about in BEES on Wednesday 10TH September and take part in long term monitoring of sites around Lough Hyne gathering invaluable data on climate change.

Recently, the group led by Dr Cynthia Trowbridge from the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology and Dr Rob McAllen of BEES were joined by Prof John Davenport and the group have been assessing micro oxygen levels on the benthos in areas of high ephemeral algal growth due to excessive eutrophication and continuing to examine the effects of this weed on benthic community structure.

You can learn more about IRES and follow the student's experience on the IRES Blog.

Welcome to Cork and we hope you have a great experience!!
