UCC 1st for Environmental Sciences

UCC has been ranked first amongst Irish Universities for Environmental Sciences and 2nd for Biological Sciences in the 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject.

UCC also features in the top 100 institutions worldwide for Biological Sciences and the top 200 worldwide for Environmental Sciences.

Overall, UCC is ranked among the world’s top 200 institutions for ten of its subject areas (see here for full details).

Responding to the news, Professor John O’Halloran, Head of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) welcomed the publication of the rankings and said it was a very proud day for the School of BEES. 

"This achievement, together with student leadership in the international green flag campaign and our ranking as number three in the international greenmetrics rankings, not only single out UCC as the top University in environmental matters, but also reaffirm our strategy of being student led, research informed and practice focussed in all we do in BEES".  

John O'Halloran also extended his congratulations to Dr Debbie Chapman the Environmental Science programme leader for her leadership within the inter-disciplinary programme.

Reflecting on the rankings, Trevor Holmes, Vice-President for External Relations at UCC said:

The School of BEES is a university leader in both the environmental and biological sciences, offering a range of  from Applied Plant Biology to Environmental Science, as well as suite of taught , from Experimental Field Geology to Marine Biology
