Promoting Plants

29 Apr 2013

An interactive tree planting and plant science talk for school children was held in Skibbereen last Friday, facilitated by the School of BEES and Liss Ard Estate.

Liss Ard Estate is home to BEES' teaching and research hub for its MSc in Organic Horticulture which was launched last year.

Friday's event saw 30 local school children, from St. Joseph's, St. Patrick's and Abbeystrewry national schools, get involved in planting a number of oak trees near the world-famous Sky Garden at Liss Ard. Staff and students from the MSc course were on hand to work with the children who were also introduced to an array of carnivorous plants from the BEES plant collection.

Eoin Lettice, joint co-ordinator of the MSc programme said the event was a huge success: "We've been really impressed by the support and encouragement we've received from the local community of Skibbereen and West Cork in setting up this new teaching and research base and rolling out the Masters programme. Friday's events were part of our outreach efforts to impress upon young people the importance of plants and hopefully we'll be doing more of these sorts of events in the future".
