Dr Aileen Callanan awarded a HSE Special Innovation Award!

This research was part of Aileen's PhD, with close collaboration between Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, HSE, School of Public Health and Department of General Practice, UCC and Primary Care.

Dr Aileen Callanan, School of Public Health UCC, was awarded a HSE Special Innovation Award in December 2024. The winning initiative focused on stroke prevention in older people across Cork and Kerry.

The team extend their warm thanks to the participating GPs, GP nurses and patients across Cork and Kerry for their enthusiastic support, COVID-19 pandemic notwithstanding! This initiative spotlights the strategic value of close collaboration between HSE, primary care and academia to address important healthcare issues.

The research was funded by Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Ms Priscilla Lynch (Head of Primary Care, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, HSE) and Ms Susanne O’Sullivan (General Manager, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, HSE), and supervised by Prof Colin Bradley (Department of General Practice), Prof Patricia Kearney (School of Public Health) and Prof Claire Buckley (School of Public Health and National Health Service Improvement Team, HSE) and Dr Diarmuid Quinlan (Irish College of GPs).

Aileen is the lead author for the winning publication, a peer-reviewed paper ‘Opportunistic atrial fibrillation screening in primary care in Ireland: results of a pilot screening programme’.
