Brazil Day Celebrated at University College Cork

UCC welcomed the Brazilian Ambassador to Ireland to campus on 29 April 2024 to celebrate Brazil Day. A series of enlightening immersive sessions were hosted throughout the day to highlight the academic and cultural blend that unites Ireland and Brazil.

H.E. Mr Marcel Fortuna Biato visited Professor John O'Halloran at the President's Office on the day where he signed the Visitor’s Book and was presented with a copy of John A Murphy’s University College Cork: A Portrait in Words and Images.

The Society of Latin American Studies (SILAS) annual lecture was dedicated to Brazil this year.  Professor Laura Izarra, Director of Irish Studies at the University of São Paulo, visited for the occasion and discussions explored the profound connections between Ireland and Brazil.

The intriguing "Segredos do Putumayo" documentary was aired in the Hub Shtepps, complemented by an expert panel discussion including one of the creative team, Angus Mitchell, and other Roger Casement scholars from Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.

CasementFollowing the documentary and panel discussion, the launch of the first Leitorado Guimarães Rosa in Ireland took place, and was introduced by Ambassador Marcel Fortuna Biato and Dr Martín Veiga, UCC’s Head of SPLAS. This lectureship is a significant milestone for the Brazilian community in Cork and is the first Irish Brazilian Lectureship.

The day, attended by members of the growing Brazilian community in Cork, concluded with the opening of the Roger Casement Photo Exhibition in the Hub Atrium, paired with live Brazilian music performed by Cork based Brazilian singer, Nathi Salviano.
