Magnet4Europe, a research project funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, is the largest research study into the health and wellbeing of the healthcare workforce in Europe. The study is taking place across six European countries: Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as the United States. In total there are 64 hospitals from Europe and 64 Magnet hospitals in the US involved in the study. The research is implementing Magnet principles into healthcare settings across Europe with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of healthcare staff.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery hosted the first face-to-face Learning Collaborative on 19th and 20th May 2022 which was attended by over 200 delegates from the US, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Germany, the UK and Ireland. This was the largest meetings of teams involved in Magnet outside of the US. The Learning Collaborative provided an opportunity for staff from hospitals in Europe who are twinned with Magnet hospitals in the US to attend plenary sessions, meet in breakout rooms to discuss their progress and present on the innovations that are being implemented to impact on the health and wellbeing of nurses and doctors working in hospitals across Europe.

Delegates were welcomed by Ireland’s Chief Nurse, Rachel Kenna, the Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Josephine Hegarty, the Head of College of Medicine and Health, Professor Helen Whelton from University College Cork, and Rebecca Graystone from the ANCC as well as Professor Jonathan Drennan from UCC, Professor Linda Aiken from the University of Pennsylvania and  Professor Walter Sermeus from KU Leuven.

Prior to the Collaborative, the research teams from the University of Pennsylvania, Karolinska Institute, Technological University Berlin, KU Leuven, University of Southampton, King’s College London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and University College Cork met in the School of Nursing and Midwifery to discuss the progress of the project and plans for the Learning Collaborative.

Overall the first face-to-face Learning Collaborative hosted by the School was a fantastic success and generated debate, discussion and innovative ideas that will positively impact on the health and wellbeing of nurses and doctors across Europe.
