The World Health Assembly, the governing body of the World Health Organization (WHO), designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife

16 Jan 2020

to advance nurses' and midwives' vital position in transforming healthcare around the world.

The staff and students of UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery welcome 2020 as the WHO International designated Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Nurses and midwives are the health care professionals who devote their professional careers to caring for individuals across the lifespan; giving lifesaving immunizations and health advice; looking after older and vulnerable people and generally meeting everyday essential health and social care needs. In many global communities, nurses and midwives are often, the first and only point of care in their communities. The WHO has acknowledged that the world needs 9 million more nurses and midwives if it is to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.

Nursing Now is an outward facing public global campaign that aims to engage public and civil society in recognising the contribution of nurses and midwives in Ireland and across the globe. Throughout 2020 activities and events are planned to celebrate nursing and midwifery and say thank you to the nurses and midwives within our health services. May 2020 will be a key month during the year as it includes the International Day of the Midwife on the 5th May and the International Day of the Nurse on the 12th May.

Nursing Now is supported by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the World Health Organisation. The vision of the Nursing Now campaign is to,

improve health globally by raising the profile and status of nurses worldwide – influencing policymakers and supporting nurses themselves to lead, learn and build a global movement’. https://www.nursingnow.org/

This worldwide campaign aims to raise recognition of nurses’ contribution to healthcare, gender equality, wider society and improved economies. Its aims include greater investment in nursing, more nurses in leadership positions, and increasing nurses’ input and impact on healthcare. The campaign is bringing to policy makers the tangible evidence needed to show that nurses improve health and will make a crucial contribution to realising universal health coverage.

In Ireland, the Nursing Now campaign is led by the INMO, as the ICN National Nursing Association, in partnership with the Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Health, HSE Office of the Nursing & Midwifery Services Director, Irish Association of Directors of Nursing and Midwifery, Psychiatric Nurses Association and academic partners Dublin City University, University College Cork and Waterford Institute of Technology.

We would like to invite you to link in with the global Nursing Now campaign and to invite you and your organisations to join with us in supporting this global movement. Further details are available on the Nursing Now Ireland website www.nursingnowireland.ie
