Application Process

Application Process

1. All prospective applicants should contact the Law School to discuss a potential research project. You can contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr Patrick O’Callaghan (patrick.ocallaghan@ucc.ie) or you can contact a prospective supervisor in the area of your proposed research. For a full list of potential supervisors, see here: https://www.ucc.ie/en/lawsite/about/people/

2. Once you have discussed a research idea with staff in the School, you should fill out the Law School Research Degree Application Form. Please contact lawpostgrad@ucc.ie for a copy of the form. In the application form, you will need to provide details of your proposed project, as well as its methodology and a research plan.

3. All applications for admission to the PhD and LLM (by Research) programmes must be submitted to the Postgraduate Applicants Centre portal (pac.ie). You will need to submit your completed Law School Research Degree Application Form to PAC. For further details, see https://www.ucc.ie/en/study/postgrad/how/research/

Criteria for Selection

You will need at least a Second Class Honours, Grade 1 in an approved primary degree or you must present other such evidence as will satisfy the Law School of your fitness to study a research degree. Most of our graduate researchers will already have a Master’s degree but this is not a requirement. In assessing your application, the Law School Graduate Studies Committee will pay close attention to your research idea as detailed in your application, your academic record and other relevant qualifications or experience. The committee will also ascertain whether a suitable supervisor for your research project is available.

When can you apply?

If you have a question of an administrative nature (e.g. queries about the application form, fees etc), you should direct this to the Postgraduate Administrator (lawpostgrad@ucc.ie). You should contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr Patrick O’Callaghan (patrick.ocallaghan@ucc.ie) if you have any queries of an academic nature (e.g. about your proposed research idea, potential supervision etc).
