UCC seeks to employ a Post-Doctoral Researcher for the project Youth Climate Justice (Consolidator Grant) led by Prof Aoife Daly.

This project is funded via a prestigious grant from the European Research Council. The position is for a duration of three years. The candidate will join an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers on the Youth Climate Justice project; researching the impact of child/youth climate action on law and human rights.

The project will analyse the growing trend of child and youth climate activism, particularly how they are claiming and asserting their own rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The project analyses in particular whether legal action involving children and youth is transforming perceptions of children, and therefore the discipline of children’s rights.  It involves talking to children and youth around the world who are taking climate cases, as well as those taking community action. Legal analysis will be conducted; as well as analysis through other disciplines such as political science and psychology to interrogate questions relating to children’s climate justice. Candidates will be working as part of an interdisciplinary team.

The candidate will be based at University College Cork, Ireland. As well as extensive desk research at University College Cork, the candidate will likely conduct field research, speaking with children and other stakeholders about environmental rights.

For this position we are looking for a highly motivated and qualified researcher specialising in law, childhood/youth studies, or a related discipline. You will be an accomplished and creative academic writer, experienced in applying academic theory, and experienced in working in a project team. You will ideally have used the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and children’s participation rights, in your research.  You will ideally have experience in first hand field research, preferably with children/youth. It is important that you will have worked/volunteered with community or non-governmental organisation groups in a local context (e.g. on an environmental project). Ideally you will have conducted research relating to environmental issues. Experience of Indigenous issues is also desirable.
