Please find below details of the events that are to be held within UCC as part of the Polish cultural festival that will be running next month. Saturday 9 November Boole IV lecture theatre

From a far country. Karol Wojtyła, Pope John Paul II: Pole, priest, pope

Free one day public conference, with speakers from Poland and Ireland, who will be addressing various aspects of the life and career of Pope John Paul II. Topics to be discussed include the moral theology of Pope John Paul II; John Paul II and European politics; the Catholic church in Ireland and the pontificate of Pope John Paul II; women in the church of John Paul II; John Paul II and the People’s Republic of Poland. Wednesday 20 November Boole I lecture theatre

Eroica (occasionally referred in the west as ‘Heroism’) is a 1958 film by Andrzej Munk, with two distinct parts, both of which are focussed on the concept of heroism during the Second World War. The first deals in a tragi-comic way with a drunkard coward who unwittingly becomes involved with the Polish Home Army, while the second is the story of a bogus escape attempt from a Polish POW camp.

Thursday 21 November VENUE TIME

Fala Jarocin '85 is a documentary film released in 2005 that contains footage of a rock music festival held in the Polish town of Jarocin in 1985. The film weaves together contemporary coverage of the performances of the participating bands with interviews with the musicians themselves, members of the audience, local politicians, the underground arts scene in Poland at that time, student activists and other groups.
