BEES academic recognised as Fellow of the British Ecological Society
Dr Markus Eichhorn from the School of BEES has been recognised as a Fellow of the British Ecological Society.
Dr Markus Eichhorn, Senior Lecturer in Plant Ecology, has been elected as a Fellow of the British Ecological Society. The BES are the oldest ecological society in the world, with over 8000 members in more than 120 countries. Since 1910 they have been dedicated to advancing the science of ecology to increase our understanding of the natural world and support effective decision-making and action. The title of Fellow of the BES recognises impact on the field of ecology. This includes contributions to the science of ecology, its practical applications, and its teaching and wider promotion.
Dr Markus Eichhorn is a forest ecologist at the School of BEES and author of the undergraduate textbook Natural Systems. His research evaluates how forest structure forms in systems from boreal to tropical, and in both natural and managed settings. This includes developing new technologies for describing and modelling forests in three dimensions. These can be used to inform management strategies that achieve outcomes for conservation, production, or delivery of ecosystem services.
Reflecting on the selection process, Professor Tim Coulson, a member of the BES Fellows Committee, said, “It was an honour to sit on the panel reviewing Fellows’ applications. I was so impressed with the quality of applications from practitioners, policy setters, and academics. The next few years will be exciting for the BES as this prestigious membership grows."
