Dr Grace Cott has been awarded an Irish Research Council Elevate Postdoctoral Fellowship to study at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), Maryland and University College Cork. This 3 year fellowship is co-funded by Marie Curie Actions and the Irish Research Council.

Grace will study the degree to which Dissolved Organic Nitrogen (DON) regulates the response of wetland plants to future climatic conditions. This will be achieved by conducting soil and porewater analyses and plant nitrogen uptake experiments on the longest running CO2 enrichment experiment in the world at SERC.

An integral part of this research is the expansion of the study to Ireland by the transfer of technology and expertise, and by examining the uptake kinetics and growth responses of Irish saltmarsh species to DON under elevated CO2. This novel research will contribute to Irish excellence in the field of global change and wetland research.

This project is supervised by Dr Marcel Jansen, School of BEES, UCC and Dr J. Patrick Megonigal, Smithosian Environmental Research Center.
