Busy Week at Lough Hyne

26 Aug 2013

This week saw the start of the second year of the visiting American student International Research Experience for Students (IRES) programme and the annual touch tank event at Lough Hyne.

This week saw the start of the second year of the visiting American student International Research Experience for Students (IRES) programme run jointly by Rob McAllen from the School of BEES at UCC and Dr Cynthia Trowbridge from the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, USA and funded by the NSF in America.

This programme brings a number of both undergraduate and postgraduate students from different institutions across the US to receive training in a variety of marine biological research and sampling methodologies across a 6 week period as well as taking part in long term monitoring programmes and conducting their own research projects.

The eight students chosen this year from a competitive application process are from Universities in Florida, New Hampshire, Oregon, Colorado and Washington State. We welcome them to the UCC labs at Lough Hyne and hope they enjoy their stay with us here in Ireland.

On Saturday 24th August, the UCC Lough Hyne team also provided their annual touch tank event at Lough Hyne as part of the Heritage Week events in collaboration with the Skibbereen Heritage Centre. A large crowd turned up despite the rain to see a diverse selection of animals brought out of the Lough by the research team and to hear a little about some of the research ongoing at the Lough.

The team were ably supported by the visiting American students and Dr Cynthia Trowbridge on the IRES programme as part of the community outreach elements. Special thanks to Mark Jessopp, Amy Geraghty and Paul McAllen for all their help in running this highly popular event this year.
