UCC research published in 'Geology'

25 Jul 2013

UCC research, a collaboration between the Schools of BEES and Mathematics in conjunction with the University of Potsdam, has been published in the leading geology journal in the World.

In a joint research collaboration between the Schools of BEES and Mathematics in conjunction with the University of Potsdam, Drs Pat Meere, Kieran Mulchrone and Martin Timmerman have had a paper on geological folding in the south Cork area published in the August edition of ‘Geology’, the current first ranked geology journal in the world.

This work focuses on the role of pre-existing tectonic cleavage surfaces in the folding process. Analysis of folded marine sedimentary rocks from the Broadstrand area has provided unambiguous microstructural evidence for slip on chemically weakened cleavage domains.

This weakening allows for systematic ‘high angle’ slip across these foliation zones which in turn facilitates the folding of the rocks by distributed shear along the sedimentary layers.

The paper is available here.
