UCC celebrates Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Inclusive UCC ran an exciting day to mark the 12th annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) on the 18th May. The theme of the day was 'Accessible Content in Higher Education'. There was a line-up of international experts in the field to speak on this theme. The sessions included interactive elements as well as critical takeaways for integrating accessibility into our everyday.
It is estimated that one billion people across the globe experience some physical, visual, hearing, or cognitive disability. Creating accessible learning environments is critical to ensuring everyone has equal access to information and education.
GAAD aims to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital Inclusion and accessibility. The day celebrated the excellent work happening within UCC to support inclusive teaching, learning, and assessment experiences.
The Digital Accessibility Statement Toolkit was also launched on the day by Professor Stephen Byrne and Dr Michele Glacken (ATU). This toolkit is the first Accessibility Statement Guide for the tertiary education sector. It is open source, and everyone will have access. It will look at how to create accessibility statements at website level, and drill all the way down to accessibility statements at modular level.
