The Implementation Science Training Institute begins today

5 Jul 2022
The event will be held at Nano Nagle Place over three days

An emerging field, Implementation researchers try to close the gap between what we know and what we do by identifying and addressing barriers to the uptake of effective health interventions and evidence based practices.

Implementation science is the study of methods to promote the uptake of evidence-based practices and research into routine practice to improve the quality and effectiveness of health services.

The Implementation Science Training Institute (ISTI) is a blended training programme and participants have already completed online training modules. This week they will participate in three days of in-person training at Nano Nagle Place.

The training programme will be facilitated by national and international experts in implementation science including Byron Powell, Rachel Shelton, Cara Lewis, Geoff Curran, Jeremy Grimshaw, Michael Sykes, Jenny Mc Sharry as well as researchers from the Health Implementation Research Hub, Dr Fiona Riordan and Dr Susan Calnan. The course is ably coordinated by Tanya van der Water from the School of Public Health.

Over the three days participants will engage in:

  • Specialised presentations from leaders in the field on advanced topics such as equity and implementation science, mechanisms of action, and implementation trial design and measurement
  • Small group work and project feedback from expert facilitators
  • Peer and facilitator networking
  • Q&A with international experts
  • Mentoring opportunities

The Implementation Science Training Institute (ISTI) is funded by the Health Research Board Research Leader Award held by Dr Sheena McHugh, Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health and programme director.

Dr McHugh says

“This is an exciting opportunity for participants to learn from leading experts in implementation science and apply that learning to projects in the Irish health service. This is a relatively new field of research in Ireland and I hope to build capacity and connections through events like the Implementation Science Training Institute”.
