Physiology Research Day 2026
A fantastic start to the academic year on Monday as we celebrated our research endeavours in the department. As always a range of studies on show, revealing the breadth and diversity of physiological research at UCC.
Many thanks to ADInstruments for supporting the day and wonderful to have UCC Physiology alumnus Michael Murray back on campus.
Presentations covered the gut-muscle axis in muscular dystrophy, endosomal trafficking in brain cancer, sleep apnoea and the microbiome, gene editing in cystic fibrosis, microbial modulation of gut function in autism, respiratory muscle cachexia in pancreatic cancer, enteric nervous function in autism, and gas transfer in pulmonary arterial hypertension. Just a sliver of the activities currently underway in the Department of Physiology!
Lisa Lonetti was voted best postgraduate presenter by the BSc Physiology programme students. Lisa provided an update of her doctoral work using gene editing approaches to correct a class of mutations in the CFTR gene that cause cystic fibrosis.
Huge congratulations to our PULSE scholars who presented their summer research projects. Iseabealla Chegini, Adam N., David Murphy
The day was capped by an intriguing keynote by Prof Matthew Bailey, University of Edinburgh, a salty and sobering reminder of the interplay between diet, blood pressure and health & disease. It was great to have Matt share the day with us and we are grateful for his positive engagement with students and staff.
