CONGRATULATIONS DR MAXWELL!

28 Aug 2025

Three cheers for Misha Maxwell who successfully defended his PhD yesterday at University College Cork.

Misha performed a comprehensive characterisation of clinically relevant indices of neuromuscular and neuromechanical performance across the natural history of disease in the mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). In addition, his work explored novel therapeutic strategies revealing the challenges of employing effective treatments for dystrophic respiratory muscles, an area that is generally understudied in clinical populations despite recognition of devastating respiratory compromise in people with DMD.

Misha has published much of his work to date with more coming soon and he has presented his findings at conferences in Europe, USA and Chile.

Sincere thanks to independent chair Prof. Geraldine (Gerry) Lee (School of Nursing & Midwifery, UCC) and thesis examiners Mohammed H. Abdulla (Physiology, UCC) and Prof. David Fuller (University of Florida, USA).

It has been an absolute pleasure working over the past 4 years with Misha who has made important and substantive contributions to our ongoing INSPIRE DMD programme of studies funded by Research Ireland.
