BRAINWAVES: EEG and fNIRS at high altitude

7 researchers from the Department of Physiology UCC headed to Calgary to join teams from Canada, USA and France to complete a week of baseline testing at Mount Royal University
before more than 40 researchers travelled to La Paz, which sits at 3,500m to explore the effects of exposure to high altitude on various physiological systems. We spent 10 days at the High Altitude Pulmonary and Pathology Institute. Projects ranged from chemoreflex interaction, respiratory muscle metaboreflex, dyspnoea, sleep studies, vestibular function, autonomic function, and the microbiome, to include the study of neurovascular coupling during motor and cognitive tasks using combined EEG and functional near infra-red spectroscopy (fNIRS).
Huge thanks to expedition leaders Prof Trevor Day (Mount Royal University) and Prof Richard Wilson (University of Calgary) and our wonderful Bolivian host Dr Gustavo Zubieta. High altitude heroes!
Our previous trips to high altitude include Nepal 2016, 2017 and White Mountain, USA 2019.
