Muscular Dystrophy Ireland AGM

David Burns of the Physiology Department University College Cork presented at the Muscular Dystrophy Ireland AGM on Saturday 23rd May in Dublin.

Dr. Dervla O'Malley and Prof. Ken O'Halloran, who are supervising David's project, were awarded funding from Muscular Dystrophy Ireland in February 2014. The project is titled 'Inflammation in hypoxia-induced exacerbation of respiratory muscle dysfunction in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy'. Hypoxia is a clinical feature of many neuromuscular disorders as a result of respiratory muscle insufficiency. A major focus of the study is to determine if inflammation, mediated by IL-6 signalling, underpins respiratory muscle dysfunction in hypoxia.
