29 May 2020

Articulating the case for the specialist knowledge and skills gained through postgraduate gerontological nursing programmes

Professor Corina Naughton was appointed to the Professor of Clinical Nursing in Older Person’s Healthcare in 2017, a joint post between the School of Nursing and Midwifery University College Cork and the South/SouthWest Hospital Group (SSWHG).  Prior to this post, she worked as a Senior Lecturer with a specialist interest in older people care in the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London  and was a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Dublin.

Corina’s work straddles both education innovation and research in gerontological nursing. There is an explicit focus on building the specialist and general workforce capability to deliver consistent high-quality care and services for older people. She has a particular interest in optimising care in acute hospitals for older adults living with frailty and or dementia.

Professor Corina Naughton was on Morning Ireland this morning – please take the time to listen to this podcast.

The piece is titled: NHI: Lessons must be learnt from pandemic in care homes and included Professor Seán Kennelly, Consultant Physician in Geriatric medicine at Tallaght University Hospital and Professor Corina Naughton Professor of Clinical Nursing in Older Person's Healthcare, University College Cork who  discussed the impact of Covid-19 on the nursing home sector.  Corina very eloquently articulated the case for postgraduate gerontological nursing programmes and the knowledge and competencies developed through such programmes.
