Open child health lecture by Professor Farhana Sharif in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC

This event was organised by Ms Judy Purkiss (ADPHN) and Dr Helen Mulcahy, College Lecturer School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. It was held in the School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC on 15th of April 2019. Directors of Public Health Nursing in Community Healthcare Organisations 4 (Cork and Kerry) Ms Carmel Buckley, Area Director Nursing and Midwifery Practice Development in HSE South and Nurture all supported the event.

The focus of the lecture was:

  • The basics of child development and factors that affect it
  • Surveillance, Screening, Evaluation and Assessment
  • Autism spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder and screening tools such as the ASQ-3

There was two 2 hour-plus sessions to accommodate as many clinical staff as possible. The total attendance on the day was 142 and included student Public Health Nurses (PHNs), PHNs, Assistant Directors of PHN, Community Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, UCC lecturing staff and others. It was wonderful to have such a professionally diverse group, all passionate about their important roles in preventative health for children, their families and populations. Feedback on the day was incredibly positive and the organisers would like to thank everyone for their support.
