Dr. Tom Andrews retires
Dr. Tom Andrews left the University of Manchester to join the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork on 1st September 2004 just in time to move with us all to the newly purpose built complex at BHSC on the 4th November 2004 and he has been with us since.
Tom was born in and grew up in Limerick city. However his grá for Cork started at a young age, as he came to Cork for secondary school and boarded in Rochestown.
Tom qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1979 in Liverpool and went on to specialize in Intensive Care Nursing. He undertook a BSc in 1995, qualified as a Nurse Tutor in 1996, undertook an MSc in 1997 and completed his PhD in 2003. His academic career was with the University of Manchester for a number of years.
Tom was one of the first converts to teaching using the high fidelity simulation mannequins and the clinical skills simulation suite.
He has taught on both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; Tom has supervised research projects at BSc Degree, MSc and Doctorate Degree levels; Tom willingly undertook the role of Course Coordinator for the Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiac & Intensive Care (his specialist area) and later the role of Course Coordinator of the Masters in Nursing (Taught) programme.
Tom possess the unique skill to think outside of the box, see through the myriad of issues surrounding matters and can in one or two sentences address the kernel of an issue to be solved or resolved. He is always constructive in his advice and sage in his wisdom – something that will be greatly missed. Over the years he has enthusiastically attended a great many conferring, presentation of parchment and award ceremonies to celebrate student and graduate achievements.
Externally - he has acted as Extern Examiner at the University of the West of England (Bristol), University of Glasgow, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Southampton, University of Manchester and the University of East Lancashire. Throughout his career he has presented at local, national and international conferences – always adding to the quality of material delivered.
From the beginning of his tenure in UCC, Tom’s passion for research was obvious. His expertise in grounded theory methodology is internationally recognised and acknowledged. Indeed his friendship with Barney Glaser is envied by all Grounded theory enthusiasts. Tom has been invited to facilitate workshops\seminars in Europe, America, South America and Australia which is testament to his expertise in GT.
Tom is a highly valued colleague in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and will be hugely missed on his departure. He is greatly respected by the many students, graduates and staff he has lectured, supervised and mentored. We are privileged to have worked with Tom - a fantastic colleague, great intellect and a true sincere friend to many.
As he begins his retirement, we wish him every health, happiness and success for many years to come. Above all enjoy your freedom, unlimited weekends, time with family, opportunities to travel, catch up with friends, and enjoy Cobh.
