Intern Induction Day, School of Medicine, University College Cork

7 Jul 2015

Monday 6 July 2015: Next week marks the beginning of the medical careers of many newly qualified doctors. Today the School of Medicine hosted the Intern South Network Induction Day. Over 130 new doctors attended, with graduates from UCC, other Irish Medical Schools and overseas in attendance.

Dr Paula O’Leary, who has taken over the role of Intern Network South Coordinator from Prof Carl Vaughan, welcomed the new doctors and gave them words of advice on embracing their new role. Geraldine McNamee, the administrator of the Intern South Network, guided them through the necessary paperwork that they will need to start in practice.

The interns then attended workshops on procedural skills lead by Dr Rob Gaffney, the National Early Warning Score led by Dr Dorothy Breen and Dr Siun O’Flynn, and “Safe Prescribing” lead by Dr Paul Gallagher. Dr Liam Healy talked them through the “Common Calls” that an intern might expect to experience, and facilitated a question and answer session with 6 of last year’s graduates on “A Day in the Life of an Intern”.

These new doctors will rotate through multiple hospitals in Cork City and the surrounding area. We wish them every success in their new and exciting careers.
