UCC FLAC Society host Mental Health Law and Capacity Law Conference

23 Mar 2026

The Annual FLAC Conference took place on 9th March in the Aula Maxima, UCC.

On Monday, 9 March, the UCC FLAC Society hosted its Annual FLAC Conference in the Aula Maxima at University College Cork. This year’s conference focused on the themes of Mental Health Law and Capacity Law, bringing together a range of expert speakers from both UCC and across the country.

The conference commenced with opening remarks from Conference Director, Kim Bartak.

The first panel was chaired by Dr Darius Whelan of UCC, who introduced the overarching theme with a presentation on diversion in mental health law.

This was followed by Professor Mary Donnelly, UCC, who examined the relevant legal frameworks, including the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2010. The panel concluded with a presentation from barrister Niall Nolan on the limits of the law, with particular reference to the defence of illegality.

The second panel opened with Mark Felton of Amorys Solicitors, who provided an analysis of the Ward of Court process. He was followed by solicitor Con Barry of Comyn Kelleher Tobin, who considered the application of these issues in the context of children.

The conference concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, during which attendees had the opportunity to explore the practical insights and professional experiences shared by the speakers.

The event was proudly sponsored by Comyn Kelleher Tobin LLP.
