Spotlight on LLM Marine and Maritime Law

26 Feb 2026
The Irish Naval Service hosted the LLM Marine & Maritime Students aboard the LE WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS earlier in February 2026.

The ground-breaking LL.M. (Marine & Maritime Law) Programme at University College Cork is the only such specialist programme in Ireland and one of very few offered anywhere.

The programme comprises a rich selection of core and elective specialist taught modules, covering such areas as Law of the Sea, Admiralty Law, Port Law, Marine Environmental & Natural Resources Law, Global Maritime Security, and Sale, Insurance and Carraige of Goods at Sea.  It prepares graduates for rewarding careers in a broad range of maritime activities, including shipping, fisheries, renewable energy, marine spatial planning, environmental advocacy, marine policy-making and law enforcement.

One unique element of this ground-breaking LL.M. Programme involves the active ‘clinical’ engagement of students with the Irish Naval Service in order to explore key issues in the practical day-to-day enforcement of key aspects of the Law of the Sea.  Students taking the elective module on Law of the Sea – Clinical are hosted at the main naval base at Haulbowline, Cork and undertake a trip to sea aboard a naval warship in order to experience the difficulties of marine enforcement at first-hand. The Irish Naval Service has been a central and indispensable partner in the delivery of the LL.M. Programme since its establishment 10 years ago.
