International Safe Abortion Day

5 Oct 2026

Last week to mark International Safe Abortion Day, September 28th, colleagues from the School of Law Dr Claire Murray and Allison Martin (PhD candidate) contributed to a blog series published on Doing Feminist Legal Work.

The series brings together contributors from a range of disciplines to speak to one of the challenges with statutory time limits and limitations on abortion care in Ireland. In spite of constitutional and statutory change legalising abortion in Ireland, current guidance denies follow-up abortion care in the small number of cases where a lawful early medical abortion (EMA) fails and the pregnancy continues after 12 weeks. As a result, abortion seekers are still compelled to travel to receive care and abortion providers are prevented from delivering the highest standard of abortion care.

The blog series was co-ordinated by Professor Ruth Fletcher, School of Law QMUL.
