Cork historian named in international award
Dr David Fitzgerald of the School of History was recently named one of two runners-up in the United States’ Society of Military History’s Edward M. Coffman Prize.
Edward M. Coffman Prize is a highly-competitive international award based on the submission of book manuscripts, the prize recognizes the work of scholars who have yet to publish a scholarly monograph and seeks to encourage the integration of military history with social, political, economic, and diplomatic history.
Dr. Fitzgerald’s manuscript - “Learning to Forget?: The US Army and Counterinsurgency Doctrine and Practice from Vietnam to Iraq” - is based on a PhD thesis he wrote at UCC under the supervision of Professor David Ryan. Dr Fitzgerald was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Clinton Institute, UCD in 2010-2011 and was appointed Lecturer in International Politics at UCC in September 2011.
