New book publication: Metabiography
Caitríona Ní Dhúill, professor in German, publishes new monograph, Metabiography: Reflecting on Biography with Palgrave Macmillan
A biography is 'the story of a person, told by someone else'. But how are such stories written, and how do we read them? What can we learn from the language and form of biographies, and how do they relate to other kinds of literature? Investigating a wide range biographical and theoretical writings in German and English from 1750 to the present day, Caitríona Ní Dhúill's new book explores the contradictions of biography. Addressing the fraught relationships between genre and gender, private and public, image and text, life and narrative that play out in the modern biographical tradition, Metabiography suggests new possibilities for reading, writing and thinking about this enduringly popular genre.
