Besides offering Chinese credit classes at UCC, the UCC Confucius Institute plays an active role in expanding Chinese teaching in primary and secondary schools, promoting Chinese as part of the official Irish school curriculum. In 2009, only optional Chinese courses were offered in 24 primary and secondary schools, with 1000 participants. Now, there are already 4 Confucius Classrooms, 100 Chinese classes in primary and secondary schools, with both mandatory and optional Chinese courses offered. This includes 262 classes in secondary schools and Transition Year (TY), 39 classes in primary schools and 20 in other grades. In 2017, there are a total of 7,000 students registered in Chinese courses throughout Ireland.
