Aonghus Lavelle

Biography

Aonghus Lavelle is a Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience and a researcher at APC Microbiome Ireland.

Aonghus completed training in gastroenterology at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital and Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar, during which he undertook a PhD looking at the gut microbiota in ulcerative colitis under the supervision of Professor Ronan O’Connell at St. Vincent’s University Hospital. This was undertaken in collaboration with Professor Paul Cotter, Dr Orla O’Sullivan and Professor Fergus Shanahan at APC Microbiome Ireland and Teagasc, Moorepark.

Subsequently, Aonghus spent a year as a clinical research fellow at the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinic in Cork University Hospital and at APC Microbiome Ireland, where he was involved with the teams of Dr Liam Fanning and Professor Colin Hill looking at the gut virome in IBD. This was followed by a PRESTIGE post-doctoral fellowshipin Paris in the laboratory of Professor Harry Sokol studying various aspects of the bacterial and fungal microbiome in health and disease.
