Yensi and Blaine – classmates on the MSc Molecular Cell Biology with Bio-innovation and founders of GlowDX.

At UCC they founded GlowDX – a start-up aimed at developing diagnostics to rapidly detect mosquito- borne viral infections in humans like dengue, zika and chikungunya. These diseases infect millions of people worldwide each year, but early and affordable detection is often not possible in the regions most affected. GlowDX will change this with their diagnostic platform, tailored to the specific needs of developing countries. To help them achieve their ambitious goals, GlowDx is now raising seed-capital investment to further commercialise their platform. GlowDX combines Yensi and Blaine’s passion to create novel and sustainable solutions to current health, social and environmental problems using their scientific and business know-how.

Blaine:

"The MSc in Molecular Biology with BioInnovation was the inflection point I needed on my journey to starting my business, GlowDx. The blend of molecular biology & business allowed me to see both sides of the coin, both technical & commercial aspects becoming one. This Masters has allowed me to see the opportunities that scientific technologies can bring, while also seeing the execution required to bring them to fruition."

Yensi:

"Coming from Honduras, my career prospects in molecular biology were very limited. However, UCC allowed me to pursue the goals I always dreamt of: PhD in Cancer Research and a start-up that will solve important health problems in my country and the whole of Latin America."
