Apocrypha Hiberniae II: Apocalyptica

18 Apr 2024

The third and final volume of Apocrypha Hiberniae II: Apocalyptica has just been published, as part of the Corpus Christianorum Series Apocryphorum!

This collection of medieval Irish texts describing the end of the world includes an edition and translation, with detailed introduction and notes, of “Poems 153-162 of Saltair na Rann”, by Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh; it complements the second volume of The End and Beyond: Medieval Irish Eschatology, edited by John Carey, Emma Nic Cárthaigh and Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh (2014; The End and Beyond | Celtic Studies Publications), the book resulting from the Department’s IRCHSS-funded project ‘De Finibus: Christian Representations of the Afterlife in Medieval Ireland’ (2009-2012).

The first volume was an edition of the first and second recensions of the cosmological apocalypse In Tenga Bithnúa, by John Carey; and the second volume included editions of the eschatological works Fís Adomnáin and Dá Brón Flatha Nime, also by John Carey.

Apocrypha Hiberniae is produced by an editorial board that includes John Carey, Máire Herbert and Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh, operating under the auspices of the Association pour l’Étude de la Littérature Apocryphe Chrétienne (AELAC). The publication of this volume marks AELAC’s fortieth anniversary.
