33rd Irish Conference of Medievalists

The Department of Early and Medieval Irish, in conjunction with the Schools of English and History, the Departments of Archaeology and Classics, and Scoil Léann na Gaeilge, hosted the 33rd Irish Conference of Medievalists on 27-29 June 2019, with 47 speakers from 10 countries.

The delegates were welcomed by Paul McSweeney, the Vice President for Learning and Teaching, and there were plenary lectures by Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards  (Oxford) and by Professor Jane Geddes (Aberdeen). Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards’s lecture, introduced by Her Excellency Else Berit Eikeland the Norwegian ambassador, was the inaugural Donnchadh Ó Corráin Memorial Lecture, jointly funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the National University of Ireland.

Professor Pádraig Ó Macháin launched CELT’s new electronic edition of An Irish Materia Medica by Tadhg Ó Cuinn, edited by Micheál P.S. Ó Conchubhair (electronic edition by Beatrix Färber); and there was an evening event on the theme Ireland – Italy – India: Medieval Irish Herbs, with Beatrix Färber, Brigid Mayes, Anuradha Gopalaiah and Benjamin Hazard.

The conference was marked by the introduction of two new prizes, awarded at the conclusion of the proceedings, funded by the Irish Manuscripts Commission and by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.

Next year’s Irish Conference of Medievalists will be held in Queen’s University Belfast.
