The OT Clinic

Welcome to the OT Clinic

Welcome to the Brookfield Clinic for Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (OSOT). Our clinic was established in 2006 as a joint venture with occupational therapy services in the community(HSE) and with a local primary school for children with special education needs. The HSE partnership is with the Cork Community OT service who provide occupational therapy for adults and children.

The OT Clinic

Initially the clinic served adults and then went on to provide a clinic-based service for children under 6 years of age. Since July 2010, the clinic serves as a children’s service, for children in the catchment area of South Lee. The clinic has a joint aim: to provide effective therapy for children and families who attend the service, and to provide education for the Occupational Therapy students being educated in the Department.

The school partnership works as an on-site and as an outreach clinic with St Killian’s School in Bishopstown. Children in the school who attend occupational therapy avail of the clinic room for sensory-motor work each week during term time. Occupational Therapy students in Year 2 then attend the school for experience of working with children in small groups and for individual therapy sessions in the context of a school environment.

Occupational Therapy students learn a broad range of knowledge and skills during their 4 year programme and the clinic provides a range of experiences for them in particular to make the learning real. As a task-based learning programme, learning on the job, doing tasks related to practising occupational therapy ensures students’ learning is as effective as possible.

The Brookfield OSOT Clinic also services as a site for research and to date some undergraduate and post-graduate projects have taken place using the clinic facilities.
