NMBI Inaugural Summer Series – June 2022

16 Jun 2022

Celebrating the great achievements of our students, colleagues of the School of Nursing and Midwifery and our clinical colleagues in practice.

On Tuesday, 7 June 2022, the School of Nursing and Midwifery co-hosted a Summer Series event with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, on the future of children’s nursing in the community.

An Opening Address was delivered by Ms Essene Cassidy, President, NMBI, which included a video address from Ireland’s Chief Nurse Ms Rachel Kenna.  The most up-to-date statistics from the NMBI register were presented by Ms Carolyn Donohoe, Director of Education, Policy & Standards NMBI.  This outlined the current situation regarding education and registration of Children’s Nurses in Ireland.  Prof Josephine Hegarty addressed the forum on behalf of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

A panel discussion on the topic of Children’s Nursing in the Community was hosted by Ms Rosemarie Sheehan, Children’s Health Ireland (CHI).  The panel discussed the need to increase community and outreach services to children and their families, delivering safe, high-quality care in the community.  Perspectives on Palliative Care and Care of the Children with Acute and Complex Needs were presented and discussed. The panel consisted of Mr Tyrone Horne, Clinical Nurse Co-Ordinator for Children with Life Limiting Conditions Cork and Kerry; Ms Eilin Ni Murchu, Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation; Ms Cora O’Leary, Resilience Care; Ms Aisling Glavin, CNM 2, Puffin Ward, CUH; Mr Martin Foy, Parent Representative; Ms Marieke Buckley, Internship Student; and Ms Claire Hayes, School of Nursing and Midwifery.

An individual interview was held with Ms Olga Buckley, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, who pioneered the development of the nurse-led Paediatric Haematology Oncology Outreach Service at Mercy University Hospital.  This model provides a blue-print for community-based children’s health services nationally.

The evening was an opportunity to debate the key issues facing Children’s Nursing in Ireland.  It generated a robust and lively discussion, with a very interactive audience, highlighting the opportunities and roadblocks for advancing community-based children’s services.

The discussion was summed-up and the event closed by Ms Sheila McClelland, Chief Executive of NMBI.
