'Anatomy of an Epidemic and Lessons Learnt: How do we Build a Global Movement in Mental Health?'

In Anatomy of An Epidemic, published in 2010, Robert Whitaker asked why the number of psychiatric diagnoses given to adults and children has skyrocketed over the past 50 years and why this epidemic parallels so closely the growth and dominance of psy-chiatric drugs as treatment? The publication of Anatomy of an Ep-idemic in 2010 helped plant a seed for fundamental change in psy-chiatry, as it presented a scientific story that told of a paradigm of care that did more harm than good. In this talk Whitaker con-siders opportunities and challenges how we can collectively build a new paradigm of care.
Robert Whitaker is a journalist and author of two books about the history of psychiatry, Mad in America and Anatomy of an Epidemic. In 2010 the latter won the U.S. Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism. He is the co-author, with Lisa Cosgrove, of Psychiatry Under the Influ-ence. He is the founder of madinamerica.com, a website that features research news and blogs by an international group of writers interested in “rethinking psychiatry.”
